Mentoring FAQs
Mentoring for Young People at The Harrogate International Academy
What is the goal of the mentoring programme?
Our mentoring programme aims to:
- Enhance your child’s self-esteem and confidence.
- Improve academic performance.
- Foster motivation and crucial life skills.
- Help them navigate challenges and discover their aspirations.
How does mentoring work?
- Frequency: You choose how often your child attends mentoring sessions.
- Scheduling: Our team will coordinate with you to create a timetable that suits your child’s needs.
- Method: Sessions are conducted via Zoom or Teams, and a link is provided before each session.
What is the role of a mentor?
Mentors provide support, guidance, and encouragement. They:
- Help mentees untangle complex thoughts and decisions.
- Use a “Socratic dialogue” method, asking open-ended questions to inspire critical thinking and self-reflection.
- Focus on building the mentee’s confidence, decision-making, and lifelong learning skills.
What happens during mentoring sessions?
Sessions are tailored to your child’s needs and interests. Activities may include:
- Discussing literature or ethical dilemmas.
- Gaming or sports to develop problem-solving and adaptability.
- Exploring personal values and setting goals.
Are the mentoring sessions confidential?
Yes, all discussions are held in strict confidence to create a safe and trusting environment. However, if there is a risk of significant harm to your child or others, appropriate steps will be taken to ensure safety.
What if we need to reschedule a session?
We understand that unforeseen circumstances can arise. Please let us know at least 24 hours in advance to reschedule.
How involved can parents be in the mentoring process?
Parents are encouraged to:
- Discuss their child’s progress or concerns with the mentor. We don’t routinely share what is discussed in sessions in order to create a safe space for your child to openly share their thoughts and feelings.
- Provide feedback to help tailor the mentoring experience. You can always contact the Principal for any queries or additional support.
What is the difference between mentoring and therapy?
Our mentors are not therapists. While they offer guidance and support for personal growth, they are not equipped to handle complex mental health issues. For such concerns, we recommend seeking a licensed professional.
How long does the mentoring relationship last?
The duration of mentoring varies based on your child’s needs. Some relationships may continue informally after the structured sessions end, with occasional check-ins.
What outcomes can I expect from the program?
Through mentoring, your child will:
- Build confidence and resilience.
- Gain clarity on their goals and values.
- Develop critical thinking and decision-making skills.
- Foster a lifelong curiosity for learning.
How can I contact the school with additional questions?
If you have more questions or need support, feel free to contact our Principal, at [email protected].
We look forward to working together to help your child grow and thrive through our mentoring program!
